Homesteading: Reflections #3: The Local Fair

I grew up in a rural community and, for the most part, have lived in this region my entire life.

The local fair, that takes place every year at Thanksgiving (Canada’s), has been a must-do for the local community.

When I was young, we had a single day for the fair and people would travel across the country to come home for the fair. It was a time to reconnect, to share stories, food, entertainment, and laughter.

The fair was also the time and place to showcase and celebrate skills, talents, and interests - from the very young to the very old.

Since those days, the fair has expanded to a 4-day event, and, in my opinion, has lost that special connection that the single day offered, or should I say “provided”.

This year, to honour my mom (who is 95) and her sister (who is 94), I secretly entered quilts that they had made this year into the competition. And, just because I was there anyway, I also entered my crocheted dolls.
The ladies got second placed for their quilts and I got a first for my dolls… but more importantly the local newspaper happened to show up while we were there and the reporter did an interview, asking about their 60 years of quilting and fair entries.

Well, wasn’t that wonderful!
And, now, I sit and reflect on the importance of community gatherings and passing down of knowledge as well as the connection with the old-timers and the memories.

Homesteading has grassroots in the local fairs. I hope we don’t forget.

And then ... the ladies made the front page of the online newspaper!

Tomorrow the print version hits the stands. We will see where they land on that
