Preserving milk before it goes bad

My mom had some milk that she wasn’t going to use up, so I freeze-dried it!

How to freeze-dry milk

  • I poured the milk onto trays (with the trays already in the freezer) and let it freeze. I could have put it directly into the freeze-dryer but I only had two trays worth. So, I froze the milk until I had two more trays of something liquidy to process along with it.
  • Then I put the trays into the freeze-dryer and processed the milk
  • Next, I placed the dried milk into jars, crushing the flakes down in, creating powdered milk.
  • I vacuum sealed the jars and labelled them with the name and date
  • Next, into a cool, dark storage cupboard.

At some point, I would like to make separate containers of freeze-dried banana bread ingredients - the bananas, the milk, etc.
Some day, it will happen! Honest.

What do you do with extra milk?
