Cooking & Preserving #18: Did I just start a new routine?

I like routine in my life - it’s my best strategy for being productive, efficient, and living my goals.

Today, I did a “thing” and I think it is the beginning of a new routine in my life and I like it!

After trying the sourdough process in Elaine Boddy’s book “The Sourdough Whisperer”, I have made three loaves, three successful loaves, three delicious, successful loaves of sourdough bread.

How do I know that they are delicious and successful? Well, I eat a couple of slices and Rick devours the rest. Imagine: my picky eater is choosing my homemade, made from scratch, bread over the store-bought white stuff! I’m in awe.

So what is the new routine?

Day 1: I feed my starter in the morning, as usual. (I was keeping the sourdough starter in the fridge but I’m making bread twice a week, so it might as well stay on the counter) and then I feed it again in the afternoon.
“Why,” you ask? Check out Day 2

Day 2: at 5 AM, I remove a cup of sourdough starter before feeding it (= the discard) and save that for making pancakes when it is breakfast time … and, then, feed the starter and start the sourdough bread-making process.

Day 3: bake the bread (and feed the starter)

Day 4: repeat, starting again at Day 1

The Lifestyle

How does this fit with my new lifestyle, the living a simpler life?
  • I’m making my own bread
  • I’m making a hot breakfast twice a week
  • I’m cooking from scratch
  • I’m starting the day, grounded in the ways of my ancestors, who relied on the kitchen as a source of food, family connectedness, as well as the connectedness with nature, the real source of food
The routine feels good. It makes me feel capable and accomplished, and that feeling of knowing that I am contributing to the bigger picture and getting not caught up in the busy-ness of the modern world. I feel grounded.

I am grandma.

(Thanks Elaine Boddy for inspiring this new routine in my life)
