  2. Day 18: is a hydroponic system worth it?

Grow your own food … indoors … in the winter … in Canada …. Can I?

That was the goal and the question when I decided to try using a hydroponic gardening system.

I’m now 18 days in and I’m so pleased and excited.

The Seeds

The lettuce seeds are the DILLON variety, purchased from West Coast seeds this fall.

This variety has a 45 days to maturity timeframe. We are on Day 18.

Some information that I found says that the hydroponics can speed up that date. We will see. Our lettuce plants have had new leaves showing a curl, starting to form a ball, the head of lettuce.

When will they be ready to eat?

Technically, we could be eating the leaves now.

As the new leaves grow and start to form that ball, the outside leaves could be harvested and added to sandwiches.

I am going to wait a few more days before I do that. Half-way in, 3 weeks, sounds like a good plan. That would be day 21, so, this weekend, I will be doing a little harvesting!

My first harvest: the leaves won’t be big and there won’t be many, but they will be homegrown, indoors, in winter, in Canada!

I will keep you posted.
